Recovery Time Objective (RTO)
The maximum acceptable duration of time within which a business process must be restored after a disaster or disruption. It is a critical component of disaster recovery planning.
RTO is a key metric in disaster recovery planning that determines the acceptable amount of downtime for critical business processes. It is used to prioritize recovery efforts and allocate resources effectively.
A shorter RTO indicates a higher priority for the business process, as it has a greater impact on the organization if it is not operational. The RTO should be established in alignment with the business continuity plan and should consider both the technical and operational aspects of the recovery process.
The RTO is often measured in hours or days and is an essential part of the service level agreements (SLAs) that define the expectations for system availability and recovery times.
